A guild I belong to, the Pacific Northwest ArtFire Guild, had a challenge to create something in the theme of Independence Day. Since we include British Columbia in our guild, Independence Day rather than the Fourth of July seemed appropriate. (Canada celebrates their birth day July 1st.)
Wars are funny. Not ha-ha funny, but just strange when you think about it. Friends become enemies. Enemies become friends. And back again. It's probably why I hated studying history when I was a kid. It was too hard to keep straight.
One thing I do remember is our long friendship with France. Wouldn't you know our friendship started because of a mutual enemy at the time: Great Britian. (Now we're ALL friends, by the way, if you're wanting to keep up.) With their assistance we gained our freedom from Great Britian and became a country founded on:

My challenge piece is Amitie, French for friendship. She's made from French blue Lapis Lazuli, vintage-style filigree, vintage crystal button, and sterling silver findings on a delicate Sterling Silver Venetian Box chain.
Since I love French food and style, I am so glad we're still friends.

Beautiful creation! Blue and silver are always a stunning combination. War has always annoyed me. It is a waste of energy, money and lives. It is difficult to understand why leaders can not simply sit in a room and come to an agreement like adults should. Oh well. Happy 4th of July! ~Val
What a beautiful necklace! :) My girls and I just recently dug into the Civil War in school. I gave them an 'essay' challenge to really get them to think about what it must have been like to come across your brother or father or uncle on the battlefield... on the other side. Anyway, on a lighter note ~ hope you're enjoying a wonderful and relaxing holiday weekend! :)

Melinda -on an earlier post I posted a photograph of a civil war battlefield. A few years ago my husband and I drove through TN as part of our driving trip and went to several parks and it was very sobering to stand there and imagine the noise, the smell, the confusion... and that we were fighting each other.
I bet it was interesting to read what your girls came up with.

Lol ~ I kept this in my inbox so I wouldn't forget to respond... ;) Anyway, their responses were interesting, it was a fun essay to read and I think they enjoyed writing it too. In September we're taking a trip south to visit Gettysburg and some other historical sites. I went there as a kid but didn't do much of anything but complain! ;) I'm glad my kids enjoy this stuff as much as I now do, I told my dad he's welcome to come along with us since as kids we ruined it for him! ;)
